Reflections on the World of Fiber Art

By Mary Beth Schwartzenberger
www.marybethschwartzenberger.com

I am celebrating the completion of my website and am taking this opportunity to create a quarterly newsletter.  I hope to share with you information on my work,  fiber related events and some interesting stories about the world of fiber, handmade papers and framing.

LATEST PUBLICATION

Recently, I had a project included in the new publication: Mixed Media Self-Portraits published by Interweave Press.  It details projects by a variety of artists to create personalized portraits.  Check it out here.

THE HEALING POWER OF ART

I have witnessed over the years the healing power of art.  Art can provide a refuge to those in need of a “quiet place”.  The act of creating can also help one cope with life’s challenges.  One of the commissions I received came from a facility which cares for Alzheimer patients.  My work was selected because they told me that textures and colors are two things which seem to stay with people the longest.

Along those lines, I recommend the new release by a gifted friend of mine – Jennifer Robin.  A cancer survivor, her new CD revolves around the concept that when life deals you lemons – you make lemonade.  Info on her CD as well as her can be found on her website: www.jenniferrobin.com.

DID YOU KNOW?

The Chinese were the first to make paper.  It seems to have started by accident -  rotting cotton rags in a pool of water were trampled by passersby and eventually dried into a stiff material which could be written on.  They closely guarded their discovery for about 500 years until the 7th century, when the craft was being produced in Japan and Korea.  European papermaking seems to have started in Spain in the 12th Century, which was under Islamic rule.  They produced paper to spread the word of Muhammad.
